Congratulatory messages

REQUEST A CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE

Anniversaries are a very special time in our lives and should be celebrated. The State and Federal Governments in Australia have an arrangement to properly recognise certain anniversaries by way of messages from elected leaders and officials.

If you have an anniversary or birthday milestone coming up please provide the following details in writing:

  • Recipient(s) full name
  • Recipient(s) residential address
  • Occasion (e.g. 50th Wedding Anniversary, 100th Birthday)
  • Date of occassion
  • Date for message to be received by
  • Postal address 
  • Name and contact details of nominator (if you are not the nominee)
  • Contact number

You can make arrangements for anniversary messages up to two months before the celebration.

You can request a belated message up to one month after the birthday or wedding anniversary has passed.

Anniversary messages can be delivered directly to the recipient or to a care-of address for surprises.

Flags

If you would like to obtain an Australian flag free of charge for your school or community organisation, please get in touch.

  • The National Flag, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag are available in the following sizes:

    • 2400 x 1200 MM
    • 3660 x 1830 MM
  • The Red Ensign

Grants and funding

Local Schools Community Fund

Schools can apply for one project between $1,000 and $20,000. Projects will be for small scale capital and non-capital initiatives. Applications opened on 25 July 2019 and close at 5:00pm AEST on 30 September 2019.

Stronger Communities Programme

Not-for-profit organisations can apply for grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 for capital works or capital expenditure projects that deliver social benefits to the community. Applications opened on 5 August 2019 and close at 5:00pm AEDT on 10 October 2019.

Communities Environment Program

Local organisations can apply for grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 for small-scale, community-led environmental projects that deliver positive environmental and social outcomes. Applications opened on 12 August 2019 and close at 5:00pm AEDT on 10 October 2019.

Please let me know if you or your organisation requires the following nationhood documents: 

  • Booklet on the flags of Australia
  • Booklet on Australia’s national symbols
  • Compact disc and DVD recordings of the National Anthem
  • Portraits of Her Majesty The Queen and Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh.

These items are to be collected from my office: 287 New South Head Road, Edgecliff NSW 2027. Please also provide 2 weeks notice as these documents are not always in stock, and may need to be ordered from an external supplier.

Parliament House

VISITING PARLIAMENT HOUSE

Parliament House is open every day except Christmas Day:

SCHOOL TOURS

Australian primary and secondary schools can participate in Parliament’s School Visit Program. Subject to availability, students can experience:

  • a one hour comprehensive guided tour, including the House of Representatives and Senate chambers and parliamentary exhibits;
  • a one hour Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) hands-on education program; and
  • a half hour hospitality session with the valuable opportunity to meet your local Member dependant on the Members’ availability

School tours are available 9am–4pm Monday to Friday between 1 February and mid-December, excluding public holidays. Program times are approximate.

Due to high demand bookings are essential, and can be made up to two years in advance.

To book your school’s visit to Parliament House:

Bookings are processed in the order they are received. Once your booking has been confirmed, you will be advised by email.

If your requested date and time are not available, the School Bookings office will contact you to offer alternatives. Email or call 02 6277 4570.

QUESTION TIME TICKETS

You’re welcome to watch the proceedings of the House of Representatives and the Senate from the public galleries when you visit Parliament House.

Question Time takes place on sitting days in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and is a very popular time for people to visit. It usually starts at about 2pm in both houses.

On most sitting days, you can watch Question Time. There are 388 seats available for the public to view proceedings in the House of Representatives Public Galleries.

If you have a Question Time ticket, you must arrive in time to be seated by 2pm. After this time, empty seats will be given to visitors who have not booked tickets.

If you do not book tickets, you may be able to view Question Time if you arrive prior to 2pm.

Call the Serjeant-at-Arms’ Office 02 6277 4889 (during office hours). Bookings close at 12.30pm on the day required. Collect your tickets between 12.45pm and 1.30pm from the Cloak Room on the first floor near the House of Representatives Chamber.
